In this workshop, we’ll provide new speakers with the framework and confidence to craft their first talk. Taught by experienced speakers and storytellers, attendees will have a chance to draft and practice their talk, and produce the documentation they need to be selected to speak at a conference.
We recommend registering for both days, but you can also sign up for Day 1 only. You must attend Day 1 in order to attend Day 2. Day 1: Saturday, 12/1: Craft Your Talk On day 1, we start with an introduction to speaking at conferences and public events. We'll then go over how to craft a compelling talk using storytelling principles. Understand how to design your talk starting with your audience, and leave with an outline of a 5-minute talk. Day 2: Saturday, 12/8: Deliver with Confidence Learn how to feel confident about getting on stage. You'll learn both how to prepare yourself before going on stage, and what to do during your talk. You'll have lots of time to practice and get feedback. We'll end the day with final presentations. Your talk will be recorded so you have a video example, and you'll receive feedback from instructors and peers. Please note: Pre-reading will be emailed to you prior to the workshop. Attendees should complete reading and come to class with a talk topic. Your homework between sessions will be to continue to work on your talk to be ready to present on Day 2. You will leave the workshop with:- A framework for crafting a great talk
- A draft of a 5-minute talk and resources on how to expand it depending on length of talk
- A video of a 5-minute speaking example
- Resources for continued reading and exploration
