WhyTalks welcomes Mark Andrews, as he speaks with us about his distinguished and brilliant career as an animator and filmmaker.

Mark is currently at ReelFX, where he’s recently released a Netflix original series in the summer of 2022 called Super Giant Robot Brothers, the first CG animated series final pixel render in Unreal Engine. His talk will cover the virtual production work done for this series, among others, and innovation in animation.

Mark Andrews is also the director of Disney Pixar’s Golden Globe and Academy Award-winning feature “Brave.” Andrews joined Pixar Animation Studios in December 2000 and was a member of Pixar’s senior creative team. Prior to that, he served as Head of Story on the Academy Award-winning feature films “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille”. Andrews also provided his talents to Walt Disney Pictures’ “John Carter” as second-unit director and co-writer. In addition to his work on Pixar’s feature films, Andrews co-wrote and co-directed the Academy Award-nominated short film, “One Man Band.”

He’s received an Emmy for his writing and storyboard work on “Star Wars Clone Wars the Animated series”, as well as an Annie Award for storyboarding on “Iron Giant”. He is a versatile filmmaker, writer, director and visionary, lending his talents and skills on several other animated feature films and TV series such as “Marvel’s What If?”, “Primal”, “Samurai Jack”, and the “New Adventures of Johnny Quest”.

A CalArts alum, Mark’s been described as “a force of nature” by his fellow filmmakers.

Why that format? Why that font? Why that image? A good answer means good thinking: an idea at the heart of the work. That’s what Why? is all about: great ideas in design. Inspiring conceptual work from around the world. With minimal explanation. Because the best ideas need nothing more. WhyTalks brings together designers, artists, and creatives across discipline to understand what lies at the root of any project or artist. Follow the Why? Design blog at why.design.
