Small Talks, Big Ideas: Emory Douglas
We are Full for this event.
To provide inspirational programming to the Greater Bay Area, AIGA San Francisco has launched a series of lectures at San Jose State University called “Small Talks, Big Ideas.” Join us for what is sure to be a thought-provoking evening at our first lecture in San Jose.
Emory Douglas was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has lived in the Bay Area since 1951. Douglas attended City College of San Francisco where he majored in commercial art. He was politically involved as Revolutionary Artist and then Minister of Culture for the Black Panther party from early 1967 until its discontinuance in the Early 1980s.
Douglas’s art was always seen on the front and back pages of the Black Panther Newspaper, reflecting the ideals and politics of the Panther Black Party. He also was responsible for the production and design aspects of the newspaper.
Offering a retrospective look at artwork created during his involvement in the Black Panther Party, Douglas’s work has recently been displayed at the 2008 Biennale of Sydney, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Maryland Institute of Contemporary Art, Richmond Art Center, and the Station Museum of Contemporary Art.
His work has appeared in the June/July volume of Art in America, PRINT Magazine, and the American Institute of Public Arts. In 2007, Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas was published by Rizzoli International Publishing, Inc. and provides a comprehensive collection of Douglas’s work.
Most recent exhibits include the Arts & Culture Conference of the Black Panther Party that took place October 17-18, 2008 in Atlanta, and a major exhibit of past and present work at Urbis in Manchester, England, from October 30, 2008 – April 2009.
Special thanks to Joe Miller and San Jose State University for making this series possible.

As someone who completely missed the 60s, nearly all of the 70s, and barely remembers the early 80s, I am excited to hear this voice. He touched millions in a time and helped change so much socially. I can’t even relate, but am dying to hear his story and see his art.
Thanks to the AIGASF gang for having a lecture event down in the South Bay. Being a PA member I appreciated it. Emory was full of great stories, a unique historic perspective, and a whole bunch of great work. What he could do with 2-color, crude printing, generic typefaces, and a lot of passion was really impressive.
