Safiya Umoja Noble, Ph.D
Pronouns: She / Her / Hers Associate Professor, UCLA Visiting Assistant Professor, University of Southern California Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble is an Associate Professor at UCLA in the Departments of Information Studies and African American Studies, and a visiting faculty member to the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communication. Previously, she was an Assistant Professor in Department of Media and Cinema Studies and the Institute for Communications Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of a best-selling book on racist and sexist algorithmic bias in commercial search engines, entitled Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism (NYU Press), which has been widely-reviewed in journals and periodicals including the Los Angeles Review of Books, featured in the New York Public Library 2018 Best Books for Adults (non-fiction), and recognized by Bustle magazine as one of 10 Books about Race to Read Instead of Asking a Person of Color to Explain Things to You. Safiya is the recipient of a Hellman Fellowship and the UCLA Early Career Award. Her academic research focuses on the design of digital media platforms on the internet and their impact on society. Her work is both sociological and interdisciplinary, marking the ways that digital media impacts and intersects with issues of race, gender, culture, and technology. She is regularly quoted for her expertise on issues of algorithmic discrimination and technology bias by national and international press including The Guardian, the BBC, CNN International, USA Today, Wired, Time, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, The New York Times, and Virginia Public Radio, and a host of local news and podcasts, including Science Friction, and Science Friday to name a few. Recently, she was named in the “Top 25 Doers, Dreamers, and Drivers of 2019” by Government Technology magazine. Dr. Noble is the co-editor of two edited volumes: The Intersectional Internet: Race, Sex, Culture and Class Online and Emotions, Technology & Design. She currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Critical Library and Information Studies, and is the co-editor of the Commentary & Criticism section of the Journal of Feminist Media Studies. She is a member of several academic journal and advisory boards, including Taboo: The Journal of Culture and Education. She holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Library & Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a B.A. in Sociology from California State University, Fresno where she was recently awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2018. Lisette Titre-Montgomery
Pronouns: She / Her / Hers Art Director, Double Fine Productions Lisette Titre-Montgomery is an Art Director with nineteen years of industry experience and 13 shipped titles. Specializing in creating studio cultures where artists and creatives thrive. She has lead art studios large and small in the US, Japan, China, Australia, India, and the Philippines. Lisette has contributed to some of the industry’s highest profile games, including Tiger Woods Golf, The Simpsons, Dante’s Inferno, Dance Central 3, SIMS 4, South Park, and Transformers Age Of Extinction for Android and iOS. Her most recent project is Psychonauts 2 with Double Fine Productions. Ms. Titre-Montgomery’s passion is being a diversity advocate for the game industry. She speaks publicly about how game based curriculums are the key to engaging today's youth in S.T.E.A.M education and careers. She is on the board of directors of Gameheads, a Game Development Accelerator program for Oakland youth, establishing art curriculums and recruiting industry professionals to mentor students of color to become the next generation of developers. Lisette has also been invited to the The White House to work on initiatives to improve diversity in tech hiring and inclusion during the Obama Administration. She is is also a member of the US Department of State's Speakers Bureau and speaks overseas about opportunities for women and people of color in the game industry. Phnam Bagley
Pronouns: She / Her / Hers Founding Partner & Creative Directo,Nonfiction Phnam's passion is to turn ideas into reality, especially things that have never been attempted before. Her mission is to make life simpler, more beautiful and meaningful, and enhance the human potential. She moved to the US in 2005 to study and work in the space industry, designing modules for human spaceflight and surface habitats for the Moon and Mars. Phnam now runs a creative studio in San Francisco called Nonfiction, designing physical products like wearables, audio, neurotech devices, luxury goods, packaging and more. Clients include Intel, Philips, Halo Neuroscience, Comcast, Facebook, Marley, Atari and more. In parallel, she is the CEO of Eternal Luxe, a design professor at CCA and a mentor at Founder Institute. Christiana Chae
Pronouns: She / Her / Hers Product Design Manager, AI New ExperiencesFacebook Christiana is a design manager for the AI New Experiences team at Facebook. Her team is responsible for innovating and creating compelling demos for new technology and research insights from FAIR (Facebook AI Research), partnering with product teams across Facebook to find levers of product improvement through AI, and lastly working with Building 8, AR/VR team to create brand new products with emerging technology. Prior to this, she led design teams on Facebook Search creating a 0 ->1 discovery product, redesigning the design system, and also led design on various products on FAST (News Feed and Sharing) including a post format allowing people to share large text posts with illustrative backgrounds, and a stand-alone private photo sharing app called Moments. Her early design journey ranges from brand, UX, UI, design strategy and service design in various digital agencies such as Designit, Sapient, Razorfish and in mostly cold cities like Chicago, Oslo and Copenhagen. My most recent favorite experience at the last at Designit was giving design workshops to corporate executives around the world on bringing human-centric design processes and empathy in their business solutions. Outside of work, Christiana also co-founded, led and organized events for CreativeMornings in Oslo as well as San Francisco for 5 years. Topics like multiculturalism, ethics and social good make her heart beat, and activities like walks in forests, reading books, watching indie films at Roxie, dancing reggaeton and drawing are activities that bring her joy. Silka Miesnieks
She / Her / Hers Head of Emerging Design, Adobe As the Head of Emerging Design at Adobe, Silka is behind many immersive design and AI-related features found in Adobe products and services today. As new technology and designers needs emerge, Silka identifies the untapped potential of design tools and services and reimagining the tools of the future with teams throughout Adobe. She comes from a land down-under, with her husband, two sons, and a bottle of whiskey to lower her blood pressure. Before Adobe, Silka led product design for a Samsung AR/VR innovation team. She also co-founded Dekko with the goal of humanized technology using AR and AI technologies. Always one with an entrepreneurial spirit, Silka also mentors startups and women in tech.
