Thirty years ago the Bay Area was not on anybody’s map of design capitals; that honor went to Milan (furniture), Paris (fashion), New York (graphics), Tokyo (electronics), and a few others. In this lightning talk Barry we’ll review the astonishing story of how the San Francisco Bay Area became home to perhaps the greatest concentration of design professionals in the world.

Barry M. Katz is Professor of Industrial and Interaction Design at California College of the Arts, Consulting Professor in the Design Group at Stanford University, and Fellow at IDEO, Inc. He is coauthor of Change by Design, with Tim Brown, and NONOBJECT, with Branko Lukić (MIT Press).
