Morning Workshop 10 am - 1:30 pm

Join a unique, hands-on day focused on understanding what it takes to be a designer in government. Led by Stephanie Wade, Senior Program Manager for Bloomberg Philanthropies Government Innovation Team, and joined by real practitioners from cities around the United States, participants will explore and discuss the realities and impact of designing inside government and how it compares to designing in the private sector.

In the morning, Bloomberg Philanthropies and the civic designers will present a real case study of what it looks like to apply design in city government on a very complicated challenge many cities are facing today –improving economic opportunity for justice-involved residents. Focused on key steps in the design process, participants will move between working in teams and open discussions with the broader audience to reflect on similarities and differences of doing this work in the private sector vs the public sector. Using the case study, the participants will end by developing their own ideas on how they would solve this problem, learning more about the realities and rewards of applying these skills in the public sector.

Panel Discussion: 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

The morning session will be followed by a panel presentation and audience Q&A featuring civic designers from Bloomberg Philanthropies, Los Angeles, Austin, Phoenix, and San Francisco focusing on sharing more about how these innovators are currently using design to transform the cultures in city halls and improving the lives of residents who live there.
