AIGA launches “Design Envy” to showcase the best in design

Wide range of designers to curate daily examples of design excellence

AIGA and Adobe® announce the launch of Design Envy, a daily blog featuring the best in design as chosen by a different curator each week. Guest curators will be encouraged to share their “wish I’d done that” discoveries—recent design that’s so creative, inspiring and effective, they wish they had designed it themselves. While the curators are selected by AIGA, the professional association for design, the envy-inducing work curators choose to celebrate is entirely up to them.
A wide range of voices

Design Envy selections are chosen by designers, for designers, and will draw from all design disciplines. Each day, the week’s curator will post a new example to inspire and inform—through imagery, compelling descriptions about effectiveness, and the creative minds behind the work.

The first round of curators includes:

  • Kate Bingaman-Burt, assistant professor of graphic design at Portland State University and author of Obsessive Consumption
  • Kevin Budelmann and Yang Kim, president and executive creative director (respectively) of Peopledesign
  • Justin Cone, executive creative director of Houndstooth and editor of Motionographer.com
  • Vijay Mathews, cofounder of Winfield & Co., the firm that designed and developed DesignEnvy.org
  • Phong Tran, illustrator, website designer and VP of technology for DoubleThink

The most popular entries, as determined by votes from the community, will become a special collection in the AIGA Design Archives—the richest online resource for those who practice, study and appreciate great design.
A new channel for design excellence

With all the blogs and image-sharing sites already in existence, why launch Design Envy? In short, the wide range of excellent work happening in the profession doesn’t always come through in AIGA’s traditional channels and publications—nor has there been a consistent way to discuss and interact with the selections until now.

“Competitions and design annuals are inspiring tools, yet they’re inherently limiting since the work chosen is entirely dependent upon the work submitted,” explained Richard Grefé, executive director of AIGA. “We developed Design Envy to expand the range of voices contributing to design discussions, and to heighten the level of visual inspiration provided by unexpected choices.”

So should visitors to the site be, quite literally, envious?

“Seeing a daily post of great design may incur a twinge of envy,” noted David Rich, Adobe’s director of product marketing for design. “We trust that the envy is short-lived, and that the work shown on Design Envy will inspire contemplation, lively discussion, and instill the drive to be even better.”

Visit designenvy.org to get inspired, discuss the entries and vote on your favorites.
