Patrick Coyne is the editor and designer of Communication Arts, the largest international trade journal of visual communications. A premier source of inspiration and information through its editorials, articles and annuals, CA showcases excellence, and promotes the highest professional standards for the field.
Coyne, along with his parents Richard and Jean Coyne, received the AIGA Medal in 2004. The most distinguished honor in our profession, it was awarded in recognition of their exceptional achievements, service and contributions to the field of design and visual communication. Coyne has been a member of AIGA since 1984.
After his studies at California College of the Arts, he worked for Michael Mabry Design and SBG Partners, and co-founded the multi-disciplinary studio Patrick Coyne/Stephanie Steyer Design Office. Joining CA in 1986, he was instrumental in the transition to digital technology in the magazine’s production. Coyne is a frequent speaker at local, national and international design conferences, creative organizations, design and advertising clubs. He has been the recipient of medals and distinctive merits from AIGA, Society of Typographic Arts and Society of Illustrators.
Coyne is vice-president of the Richard and Jean Coyne Family Foundation, whose mission focuses on increasing diversity in the field of visual communications. The foundation currently funds seventeen programs managed by educational institutions and non-profit trade organizations that assist young people from economically disadvantaged backgrounds—helping high school students develop portfolios to qualify for admission to art school, as well as providing college scholarships for the study of graphic design, advertising, photography and illustration.
